The LexMC Team

Michael Rundell   Sue Atkins  Adam Kilgarriff

LexMC's three directors have an unrivalled range of experience in the production of dictionaries, and an outstanding record of innovation in lexicography and lexical computing. All three have been closely involved in the 'corpus revolution', and have played leading roles in the planning and development of several groundbreaking and market-leading dictionaries, both bilingual and monolingual. Atkins and Rundell have, between them, over 60 years' experience at the sharp end of dictionary publishing, and have planned, edited and project-managed numerous well-known dictionaries, and trained over a hundred lexicographers. Kilgarriff, one of the leading research scientists in the field of lexical computing, uniquely combines a strong research background with extensive experience of working with commercial dictionary publishers.

Each is a world leader in his or her special field, and their individual skills complement one another to provide a unique portfolio of expertise.

  • Sue Atkins is widely regarded as the leading authority on bilingual dictionaries, and has done more than anyone to establish links between theoretical linguists and practising lexicographers
  • Adam Kilgarriff is a computational linguist with an international reputation for his work at the interface between lexicography and natural language processing
  • Michael Rundell’s track record in developing monolingual learners’ dictionaries is unequalled in the field
They have also been involved in a number of major international research projects, including FrameNet and SENSEVAL. Their experience in teaching and training is unique in the field, and they have published many influential papers on practical and theoretical issues relating to dictionary-making.

In 2008 Sue Atkins and Michael Rundell published their Oxford Guide to Practical Lexicography, and Thierry Fontenelle edited its companion Practical Lexicography: A Reader.
